Government housing assistance (subsidized) is available to low-income older adults through various programs, including public housing, Section 8, and Section 202. Contact a local housing commission (listed in Housing Options section) for program information. Some housing communities process applications for subsidy on site for residents. Retirement housing communities allow seniors to live a fairly independent life in their own apartment, while providing them the option of supportive services such as meals and homemaking services. Some of these complexes are identified as an assisted living facility. They offer housing with services (optional or included) and are not licensed. Apartment complexes with Income Limitations noted offer affordable housing to seniors with a moderate income, though are not subsidized. Most offer recreational and social activities for residents. Notation short-term respite indicates an apartment community that will allow an individual to reside there on a temporary basis. All listing information is subject to change.
